Wet Basement Waterproofing
A wet basement is caused by excess water pressure (caused by heavy rain or melting snow) that is pushed through cracks in your home’s foundation. This pressure can cause major structural damage to the foundation of your home and will also contribute to other moisture-related problems, such as mold and decay. Whether you use your basement for additional living space, storage, or don’t use it at all, if you have a chronic wet basement, leakage or some degree of flooding, you need to address the problem because it will not go away on its own.
Chronic wet basements or water leak problems can reduce the value of your home and many realtors advise their customers to fix their basement before putting their home on the market. Long-term water exposure in your basement can lead to foundation erosion, mold and water-borne bacteria to grow in your basement.
Nusite offers a number of different basement waterproofing and wet basement repair solutions depending on your specific issue. We start by determining the source of the moisture and then recommending an Exterior or Interior method depending on the severity of the leak. We have been a repairing basement leaks in Toronto and the surrounding GTA for over 30 years.
Below is a quick overview of the two methods of waterproofing:
Exterior Basement Waterproofing
The exterior basement waterproofing method involves excavating and exposing the foundation wall. Next, we clean and inspect the exterior wall for any cracks. Once excavated, the walls are sealed with waterproofing membrane and new drainage (weeping tiles) are placed at the side of the footing. Last but not least, we check the connection of the weeping tile to the drain or sump to make sure it is working correctly.
Interior Basement Waterproofing
The interior basement waterproofing method is ideal for homeowners who are concerned about disturbing the outside appearance of their home, as it ensures that landscaping is not harmed in the process. With this method, wall vapor barriers/retarders and drip moldings are installed in order to collect water coming from wall cracks and other foundation wall defects. A drain then directs the water to a sump pump and finally the sump pump directs the water out of the basement.
Window Well Repairs
Keep your basement dry with window well drains. All window wells are below ground level; this makes them vulnerable to flooding. Once the wells flood, the water has nowhere to go – except into your basement. The only way to prevent excess water from seeping into your basement is by installing a drain to divert water away from your basement window.
Window wells are the most commonly overlooked part of your home. Simple maintenance and upkeep is one of the easiest ways to prevent leakage into your basement. Clearing out mud, leaves, and other debris every season can significantly decrease the chance a water overflow may occur. In some cases it may be too late to salvage a leaking window well. When this happens it is necessary to call in a professional. Learn more about window well repairs.
